What business internet actually means

Business internet is sold as one product and delivered as at least two. On one side sits shared access — a consumer network with a business contract attached, where capacity is divided among subscribers and the upload rate is a small fraction of the download figure being advertised. On the other sits dedicated connectivity: a circuit engineered for your building, with capacity reserved for your organization, the same rate in both directions, and a service commitment written into the agreement.

Both are legitimate purchases. Which one you need is not a question of company size — it is a question of what stops when the connection degrades. This page explains the difference in the terms that actually determine performance, then points to the specific services underneath it.

The vocabulary, untangled

Five terms get used interchangeably and mean different things. "Business internet" is a category, not a specification — it describes who the contract is with. "Business broadband" is shared access sold to businesses: contended capacity, asymmetric, committed to a maximum rather than a rate. "Dedicated internet access", usually shortened to DIA, is the specification that matters: capacity reserved for one organization, symmetric, with a committed rate in the agreement. "Fiber" is the delivery medium, and it appears on both sides — fiber sold on a shared, asymmetric basis behaves like shared, asymmetric service. "Enterprise internet" is a marketing register rather than a technical term. When comparing quotes, the only two questions that separate them are whether the rate is committed and whether the upstream matches the downstream.

Contention: who else is using your capacity

Shared access networks sell the same capacity many times over on the assumption subscribers will not all use it simultaneously. That assumption holds most of the time and fails during the periods you care about. A dedicated circuit is uncontended: the bandwidth is allocated to your organization and its behaviour does not depend on what the rest of the street is doing.

Symmetry: the constraint nobody advertises

Nearly every workload that moved off local servers in the last decade sends data outward — hosted applications, off-site backup, video conferencing, camera systems, voice, and replication between sites. Shared products allocate a small share of capacity upstream, which is why a connection with a large download number still feels broken at 10 a.m. A symmetric circuit at a lower headline rate frequently outperforms it for real work.

Service commitments: what you can actually rely on

A dedicated service carries defined terms for availability and response, set out in the service agreement rather than in marketing copy. Ask any provider — including us — to show you those terms before you sign, and read what the remedy actually is. The document is the commitment; the webpage is not.

Latency and jitter: the numbers voice cares about

Throughput is what gets sold; latency and jitter are what determine whether a call sounds acceptable and whether an interactive application feels responsive. A dedicated path across a network with a small number of predictable hops behaves consistently. A shared path with variable queuing does not, and no amount of additional bandwidth corrects it.

Scalability: growing without another construction project

The fiber into your building is not the limit — the optics and the provisioning are. On a dedicated fiber circuit, moving from hundreds of megabits to multiple gigabits is usually a configuration change rather than a new build, which means capacity planning stops being a capital-project conversation.

Security posture: what your traffic is exposed to

Dedicated connectivity does not encrypt anything by itself, and any provider implying otherwise is overselling. What it does give you is a defined path with known participants, plus the option to keep site-to-site traffic off the public internet entirely on a point-to-point circuit rather than tunnelling it across paths nobody controls.

A headquarters and several facilities are better designed as one network than as a collection of separate accounts. Dedicated circuits at each site, private paths between the ones that exchange data directly, and a single provider accountable end to end removes the most common failure in multi-site IT: nobody owning the whole path.

Hosted and cloud-first operations

When the applications live elsewhere, the connection is the application. Symmetric capacity, predictable latency, and a documented response process matter more than any headline speed number, because every keystroke and every saved file crosses that circuit.

Sites that cannot be reached by conventional carriers

Processing plants, remote facilities, field offices, and district sites frequently sit outside anyone's standard build. Reaching them is an engineered project — a dedicated fiber run or a private point-to-point path — and it is a large share of what this network exists to do.

Business voice running over a shared connection inherits every property of that connection. Putting hosted PBX or SIP trunking on the same dedicated fiber circuit means one provider is accountable for call quality rather than two vendors negotiating about whose fault the jitter is.
