What is Ethernet?

Ethernet started as the way computers talk on a local network and became the standard handoff for wide-area services too. When a provider delivers a circuit "as Ethernet", it means your equipment sees a familiar Ethernet port and speaks the same protocol it already uses internally.

Carrier Ethernet services

The industry standardised a small set of service types: E-Line for point-to-point, E-LAN for multipoint, E-Tree for hub-and-spoke, and E-Access for handing off to another provider. Knowing the vocabulary makes comparing quotes considerably easier, because two providers describing the same thing differently is common.

The handoff details that cause problems

Port speed, media type, whether the port is tagged or untagged, and the maximum frame size. Jumbo-frame support in particular matters for storage traffic and is worth confirming in writing rather than assuming — it is a frequent source of post-installation surprise.

Committed and excess rates

Carrier Ethernet services define a committed information rate and sometimes an excess rate above it, with traffic beyond the commitment eligible to be discarded during congestion. Understanding which of the two numbers you are being quoted is essential to comparing prices honestly.

Frame size and MTU

Standard Ethernet carries a 1500-byte payload; carrier services frequently support jumbo frames up to around 9000 bytes. This matters more than it sounds. Storage replication, backup, and encapsulated traffic all suffer when the path silently fragments or drops oversized frames, and a mismatch between what the CPE sends and what the circuit carries produces failures that look intermittent rather than structural. Agree the MTU end to end before turn-up.

Why it matters

Ethernet is the delivery format for nearly every modern business connectivity service, so its parameters are what you actually negotiate: rate, port, tagging, and frame size. Getting them agreed at order time is the difference between a smooth installation and an awkward one.
