MEF is the organization that defined what carrier Ethernet services mean, so that a service bought from one provider is comparable to the equivalent service from another. It publishes service definitions and runs certification programmes for equipment, services, and professionals.
Before common definitions, every provider described Ethernet services differently and comparing quotes was guesswork. MEF service types — E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree, E-Access — plus standard attributes for bandwidth profiles and performance give buyers a shared vocabulary and a basis for like-for-like comparison.
MEF certification is a formal programme applied to specific services, equipment, or individuals. "MEF-certified" is a factual claim about a completed certification, not a synonym for "good quality Ethernet". If a provider claims it, it is entirely reasonable to ask which services or products hold the certification and to see it.
Rather than asking whether a provider is certified, ask for the service attributes: committed information rate, excess rate if any, frame size, delivery type, and the performance objectives for delay, jitter, and loss. Those numbers are what you can hold a provider to.
The definitions that come up in purchasing are E-Line, a point-to-point connection sold either as a dedicated port (EPL) or a shared one carrying several services (EVPL); E-LAN, a multipoint service where every site can reach every other; and E-Tree, a hub-and-spoke arrangement where spokes talk to the hub but not to each other. Naming the one you want removes most of the ambiguity from a quote.
MEF vocabulary makes procurement comparable. Using its service definitions in a requirements document forces every bidder to answer the same question, which surfaces differences that marketing language hides.
