Fiber vs Cable Business Internet

"Fiber versus cable" is how the question is usually asked and it is slightly the wrong question. Fiber is a transmission medium with excellent physical properties; those properties only matter to you through the service built on top of them.

That said, the practical differences are real, because cable and dedicated fiber services tend to be built on very different assumptions about who the customer is.

Where the physical difference genuinely matters

Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference, does not degrade with moisture in the way ageing coaxial plant can, and carries signal over business distances without meaningful loss. In practice this shows up as fewer of the intermittent, hard-to-diagnose faults that afflict older copper plant — the kind that produce a support ticket every few months and never quite get resolved.

Where the service model matters more

A fiber-delivered broadband tier that is oversubscribed and asymmetric will disappoint an upload-heavy business exactly as cable does. The questions that predict performance are whether capacity is contended, what the committed upstream rate is, and what the agreement says about availability and response. Ask those and the medium becomes a secondary detail.

Cable as a deliberate second path

Because cable uses a physically different access network, it makes an excellent failover behind a dedicated fiber circuit — a cut affecting one is unlikely to affect the other. Buying the cheapest available cable service purely as a backup path is one of the highest-value resilience decisions available, provided failover is configured and tested.

Availability is the honest constraint

Cable networks pass a very large share of commercial buildings; fiber does not pass all of them. Where fiber has not been built to your address, getting a dedicated circuit means construction, with a cost and a timeline attached. That is the real trade-off in many buildings, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an optimistic one.

Scaling and what the upgrade path looks like

Cable capacity is a function of what the operator has deployed on that segment and how many premises share it, so an upgrade depends on their plant investment rather than on your requirement. Fiber capacity at a served building is generally limited by the optics and the rate you buy rather than by the glass, so increases tend to be commercial rather than physical. If the site is expected to grow, that distinction is worth more than the current headline speeds, because one path has a ceiling you do not control and the other mostly does not.

What each one needs from the building

Cable is usually already there, which is most of its appeal: the coaxial plant passes the building, a modem is installed, and the site is live in days. Fiber needs a path into the building and a place to terminate it — an entrance conduit, a riser to the equipment room, and space and power at the handoff. Where none of that exists, the timeline includes construction and building access as well as provider work, and landlord approval is frequently the slowest step in a multi-tenant property. Ask early who owns the riser and whether a fiber entrance already exists, because it changes the schedule more than any technical decision on this page.

Where neither is automatically better

For a site whose failure costs little, cable is a rational purchase and the money is better spent elsewhere. For a site that cannot stop, fiber alone is not resilience either — one path is one path. The strongest design available to most single-site organizations is deliberately unglamorous: a dedicated fiber circuit as primary, cable as a physically and technologically distinct secondary, and a router that fails over cleanly between them. That combination survives failure modes that neither product survives alone, and it costs less than a second fiber build on a genuinely diverse route.

Where fiber can be delivered to the building at a sensible cost, we recommend it, and we would say so even about a competitor's fiber over our own hypothetical coax. Where a build is genuinely uneconomic, cable is a legitimate primary service for an office and an excellent secondary path almost anywhere, because it fails independently of a fiber route. The answer that is usually wrong is assuming cable cannot serve a site without asking, or assuming fiber can reach one without a review.

Terms vary and are usually weaker than those attached to a dedicated circuit. Read the agreement rather than the marketing page, and check what the remedy actually is and how it is claimed.

Our building has no fiber. What are the options?
