A point-to-point circuit joins two of your sites and nothing else. Traffic between them stays on the provider's network, never enters the public internet, and behaves predictably because the capacity is dedicated to that link.
Point-to-point circuits are usually delivered at Layer 2, which means the provider forwards your Ethernet frames without participating in your routing. Your addressing, VLANs, and routing policy are yours; the circuit looks to your equipment like a very long cable between two switch ports.
A site-to-site VPN achieves privacy through encryption over the public internet and inherits the internet's variability. A point-to-point circuit achieves it through isolation and delivers consistent latency and jitter. For control systems, clinical data, replication, and voice, that consistency is usually the requirement.
Point-to-point does not mesh economically — connecting every site to every other site needs a link per pair. Most real networks are hub-and-spoke with a few heavy pairs, which suits point-to-point well. Many-site any-to-any requirements are better served by a routed provider network or an SD-WAN overlay.
A single point-to-point circuit is a single path, and a cut takes it down until it is repaired. Where a second, physically separate route exists, the service can be protected so traffic switches automatically, usually at the cost of a longer path and higher latency after the switch. Where no genuinely diverse route exists, protection cannot be engineered honestly, which is worth establishing before the design assumes it.
This is the service for organizations with a headquarters and outlying facilities — a plant and an office, a campus and a satellite site, a district and a remote school. It is frequently more valuable than the internet circuit, because it solves a problem the internet cannot solve well.
