What actually differs

Where is the traffic actually going?

If it is going to the internet — hosted applications, cloud platforms, customers, email — you need internet access, and Dedicated Internet Access is the engineered form of it. If it is going between two of your own locations, you need private connectivity, and dark fiber is one of several ways to get it alongside point-to-point circuits and wavelengths. Most organizations discover they have both requirements and were trying to solve them with one product.

The per-megabit comparison is misleading

Dark fiber priced against a strand-mile looks extraordinarily cheap per megabit once you light it at high capacity. That figure excludes the optics, the amplification over distance, the spares, the monitoring, and the staff — and it excludes internet transit entirely. Compare total cost of ownership for the actual requirement, or the comparison tells you nothing.

Using dark fiber to carry your own internet

A sophisticated buyer can lease dark fiber to a carrier-neutral facility, buy transit there, and run their own internet edge. That is a real architecture and it can be economical at scale. It also means you now operate an internet edge, with the routing, security, and capacity planning that entails. It is a good decision for organizations that want that and a poor one for organizations that do not realise they are choosing it.

Who operates what

With dedicated internet access, the provider owns the optics, the routing, the upstream relationships, and the IP address space, and hands you an Ethernet port with an agreed rate. With dark fiber you receive unlit strands and everything above them is yours: optics, transport equipment, and — if the fiber is carrying internet traffic — your own upstream transit contracts, your own BGP, and your own address space. That last part is the step people underestimate. Dark fiber does not come with internet access; it comes with the ability to build your own, which is a project rather than a purchase.

Traffic isolation and what each one exposes

Dark fiber between your own sites is physically separate from anyone else's traffic, so isolation is a property of the medium rather than a configuration you have to maintain. Dedicated internet access is uncontended in capacity but, by definition, connects to the public internet, so isolation there is something your firewall and routing policy provide. Neither is inherently more secure — a badly configured dark-fiber network is not safer than a well-configured internet edge — but they put the responsibility for isolation in different places, and it is worth knowing which team owns it before the design is finished.

What each commitment actually covers

These are different instruments and it is worth reading them as such. A dark fiber agreement commits to the strand: maintenance of the route, a response when it is cut, and a repair. It says nothing about whether traffic is flowing, because the provider cannot see your traffic. A dedicated internet agreement commits to a working service — availability measured over a period, a response time when it is not available, and remedies set out in the agreement. Neither instrument covers what the other does, which is exactly why organizations running both should not assume the stronger-sounding document applies everywhere.

When you need both, and how they fit

The common mature pattern is dark fiber or a private circuit between owned locations, and dedicated internet at the sites that talk to the outside world — often with internet delivered at one or two hardened sites and carried inward across the private network. That design concentrates the security perimeter and makes traffic between sites unmeasured by anyone else. It also creates a dependency worth naming: if internet reaches branch sites only across the private path, that path becomes a single point of failure for internet access too, and needs the same diversity conversation the internet circuit would have had.

  • Static addressing and BGP routing need to just work
