What is Wavelength?

A wavelength service gives you one channel of a DWDM system between two locations. It is transparent — whatever you put in one end comes out the other at line rate, without the provider inspecting or routing it — which makes it behave much more like a very long cable than like a network service.

In detail

Transparency is the point

Because a wavelength carries a client signal end to end without touching it, latency is essentially propagation plus a small fixed amount, and there is no packet processing to introduce variability. That makes wavelengths the usual choice for storage replication, data-centre interconnect, and any application sensitive to jitter.

Where it sits between dark fiber and Ethernet services

A wavelength gives you dedicated optical capacity without owning the optical layer. It is more capacity and less responsibility than dark fiber, and more transparent and higher-capacity than a typical Ethernet service. Organizations that need 10G, 100G, or more between two fixed points, without becoming an optical operator, usually want a wavelength.

Protection options

Wavelengths can be delivered unprotected on a single path or protected across two physically distinct routes, with the switch handled at the optical layer. Protection roughly doubles the path cost and is worth it exactly when a cut on one route would stop the business. Whether two genuinely distinct routes exist between your endpoints is a per-route engineering question.

Why it matters

Wavelengths are for organizations moving large, latency-sensitive volumes between fixed endpoints. If the requirement is internet access, a wavelength is the wrong product; if it is moving very large data between two of your own sites predictably, it is often the right one.
