Manufacturing connectivity questions

How much bandwidth does a plant need?

Less than most plants assume for production traffic and more than they assume for everything around it. ERP and MES sessions, machine data, and quality systems are steady and modest; camera coverage, backups, cloud application traffic, and remote vendor support are what actually fill a circuit. Sizing should start from the aggregate at the busiest shift, not from the control system alone.

Do we need a second circuit?

That depends on what an hour of stopped line costs, which is a number you know better than we do. Where a genuinely separate physical route exists to the plant, a diverse second path is the strongest answer and we engineer and document it as such. Where it does not, we say so, and a lower-cost secondary service over a different medium is an honest partial answer rather than a redundancy claim.

Is a private site-to-site path better than a VPN or MPLS?

For traffic between your own plants, usually yes. A private Layer 2 path gives predictable latency and keeps plant traffic off the public internet without the overhead of tunnelling, and it avoids the per-site complexity that grows with an MPLS estate. Whether it is worth the difference in cost comes down to how much traffic moves between sites and how sensitive it is.

Can voice and paging work on a working plant floor?

Yes, and it is worth designing rather than adopting. Hosted PBX handles overhead and zone paging, shift and after-hours routing, and integration with the noise-appropriate hardware a plant needs. The parts that go wrong when this is retrofitted are paging zone layout and emergency-call location handling, so both belong in scoping.

How long does a build to a new plant take?

If fiber is already at or near the building, weeks. If it needs construction, months — driven by route, easements, and permitting rather than by the fiber itself. Either way the honest answer comes from a route survey against the specific address, and getting that started early is the single most useful thing a plant can do about its timeline.
